Where to Park in Porto Ercole: A Guide with Maps & Costs

On this page, I will provide you with a series of useful tips and information about how and where to park in Porto Ercole, an essential aspect of your visit to plan well in advance, especially if it’s your first few times coming here and you still don’t know the area well.

Consider these points about parking in Porto Ercole:

I have known Porto Ercole for over 30 years: the tips you read here do not come from internet research, but from my direct personal experience.

useful tips and mistakes to avoid

Before illustrating the map of the car parks, I want to list a series of useful tips and mistakes to avoid regarding parking in Porto Ercole: these are fundamental for a pleasant vacation without stress and without fines.

The basic mistake not to make is booking accommodation and organising the trip without considering the parking issue. Telling yourself “yes, yes, I’ll think about parking later” is not good.

How and where to park in Porto Ercole is a crucial aspect of your holiday that needs to be planned in advance with great attention: to move and enjoy the holiday to the fullest, a car is needed, but to avoid going crazy and ruining your holiday, you need to have a secure parking space, meaning a private and reserved one, and there are few parking spaces. In summer, these few spaces become very scarce compared to the number of holidaymakers who invade this small seaside village.

So the basic advice is:

✅  if possible, book an accommodation with a parking space.

For more details, see the paragraph below.

However, the summer problem is not only that the few really good accommodations are much more expensive: the real problem, in my opinion, is that with the overcrowding of stressed visitors, you don’t enjoy your holiday in Porto Ercole.

So, still connected to the “parking problem”, my most important advice is:

ℹ️  if possible, avoid the summer. At leastavoid August.

In summer, the few public parking areas are all definitely full. And even if you have one of the few (very expensive) accommodations with a private parking space, you still won’t enjoy your holiday to the fullest, because once you’ve left your parking space, it will be difficult to find parking at the beach, at the supermarket, in Orbetello, and in any other nearby village that you will surely feel like visiting sooner or later.

This doesn’t mean that I recommend going to Porto Ercole only in January: it is enough to avoid July and August. Summer in Argentario is beautiful even in June and September. And just to enjoy the village without going to the beach, I recall some spectacular days in April and May, with the sky and sea of such an intense and spectacular blue as I’ve never seen.

On beautiful days in the mid and low season, the situation is much more relaxed, and you will enjoy your holiday in Porto Ercole much more. Of course, tourists coming from afar must book in advance even in the low and mid season, and in that case, finding good weather is a bet that only depends on luck (you can still consult the monthly climate averages), but the solution is to make bookings for accommodations that can be cancelled or modified until the last moment without paying penalties, and have an alternate travel plan ready between Tuscany and Lazio, regions full of interesting cultural destinations that can be visited even in bad weather. If you like, you can contact me for a personalised travel consultation.

In low and mid season, you can also book a more economical accommodation without guaranteed parking and rely on public parking spaces:

times and tariffs

The times of the year when parking fees apply and the hourly tariffs are clearly explained on the various signs next to the paid parking spaces. This is an example of the sign on the waterfront:

So, on the Porto Ercole waterfront, parking in summer (from 15th May to 30th September) costs €3 per hour with a maximum of €20 for 24 hours, while in autumn-winter-spring it costs €1.5/h with a maximum of €10 for 24 hours (meaning 24 consecutive hours and not a calendar day).

Red, green, and blue stickers, issued by the municipality for residents or those entitled to them, allow the first hour free with the display of a parking disk.

The parking regulations are also displayed next to the parking meters.

These are the parking meters:

Visitors must select the standard tariff, insert the coins, enter the license plate number, check the parking data, and confirm. Then, of course, the printed ticket must be placed visibly on the dashboard. You can also pay with Telepass or the EasyPark app.

⚠️

Attention: Always Check the Rules

These information are based on my experience and are subject to change. Parking regulations can change. Always check the official signs before parking. I take no responsibility for any fines.

The parking regulations are displayed next to the parking meters: read them carefully.

map of public parking areas

In different parts of the town, large signs have been placed that clearly show the location of public parking areas in Porto Ercole. This is an example of the sign located at the parking area on the waterfront next to the restaurant “Il Gambero Rosso”:

These signs are very helpful and clearly highlight the 3 main parking areas in Porto Ercole: the one right before entering the town (Piazza A. Vespucci), the one in the centre at Piazza Roma, and the spaces available at the end of the waterfront below the old town (lungomare Marinai d’Italia).

However, what is usually not noticed at first glance is that at the bottom of the legend there is also a writing “other parking areas” and that there are thin black lines next to some streets in the town. Take a better look at the sign:

Those black lines indicated by the red arrows I added show where you can park on the roadside (blue pay areas). Those spaces are additional options compared to the main car parks.

However, there is something to be said:

⚠️  the available parking spaces are still few.

Porto Ercole is a small town, and the available parking spaces for visitors are really few, especially considering that some of those spaces are also used by the local population.

As said before, for those coming on holiday to Porto Ercole, it is definitely better to choose accommodation with a parking space:

hotels and apartments with parking

At the risk of being repetitive, I repeat the advice already given:

✅  if possible, book an accommodation with a parking space.

And accommodation “with a parking space” means a hotel room or an apartment that assures you a private (not public) reserved parking space just for you, that others cannot occupy. You need to verify this aspect very well and ask for confirmation from the owner. Do not trust the simple check on “parking” in the search filters on booking.com and similar: many of the results you find then report writings like “public parking available nearby and not bookable at a cost of €5 per day”, and this writing is NOT alright. Surely there are public parking spaces, but they are few and in high season are always full. Therefore, on the site you’ll use to book the accommodation, you must check that it says “private parking available”, which could be payable or included in the price.

The accommodations that include a private parking are very few, and in high season (summer) they need to be booked well in advance, accepting to pay much more compared to an already high average price because Porto Ercole is a prestigious tourist destination.

The two hotels that offer parking are the two luxury hotels:

Then you have to go on a “treasure hunt” among the very few rental apartments with a private parking space.

Or come to Porto Ercole out of season, when surely the public parking is half empty, and most importantly, there is no summer ZTL:

consider the ZTL

Parking the car in Porto Ercole is certainly a problem, but in high season it becomes a “secondary” problem: in the sense that the main problem is actually accessing the port or even entering the town, since access on certain dates and times is forbidden by a Limited Traffic Zone controlled by relentless cameras that record number plates and result in hefty fines for those who enter the prohibited areas without permission.

The issue is that these “prohibited accesses” are not at all clear, especially for foreign tourists.

I delve deeper into the subject in my article on the ZTL in Porto Ercole:

ZTL Porto Ercole

I recommend you read the article on ZTL carefully to avoid fines.
